The Cloud – What is it?

30 September 2020

You hear people talk about ‘the cloud’ a lot in the online world – and it is clear they aren’t talking about the ones outside that bring the rain!  The cloud is a term used to refer to cloud computing, the idea of having software that isn’t based on your own server but elsewhere, out on the internet.  So what is it and how could your business use it?

The cloud is a powerful tool that is perfect for remote working.  That’s because it can be accessed anywhere, by multiple people but still in a secure manner.  It is ideal for businesses that don’t operate in a single location or that don’t want a big, expensive server in the office to run all of their systems.

Another benefit of the cloud is that no-one ‘owns’ it and anyone can use it to store their software.  Yes, you need a subscription or permission to use the software you find on it (such as Microsoft Office or Google Drive) but anyone can use the cloud.  Some companies also have their own dedicated cloud services such as Amazon.

The future of software is clearly cloud-based.  Easy to update, bug-fix and modify, cloud based software has all the flexibility that a disc-based system needed but never managed.  It is also the ideal place for backups, secure storing of data and a host of other applications, all without need for those big servers.
