What is Digital Etiquette?

26 March 2019

Digital etiquette or netiquette is a basic set of rules that people should follow when they are using the internet to make it a good place to be, both for themselves and for others.  We see examples all the time where big names or companies make mistakes, hijack a hashtag and offend people or simply post inappropriate stuff.  Behind the reaction to these mistakes is netiquette.

Another reason why it is so important is that everything online leaves a permanent digital footprint.  Sure, you can delete that Tweet or that Facebook post but somewhere, it is registered forever.  And there are people who can find these deleted things or grab a screenshot before it is gone and use them against you.

The Golden Rule is one thing to have at the forefront of mind when you do anything on the internet – would you say that in real life?  Would you make that comment if the person was standing in front of you?  If the answer is no for any reason, then you shouldn’t make it online either.  While some people purposefully go out to shock, offend or upset, the majority of us want to live a happy online life.  And this is even more important for businesses, where every update or post reflects on the brand – and people have long memories.
