Will Business Landlines be Required in 2019?

28 December 2018

There’s no doubt that the switch to mobile continues at a pace and businesses can do more with smartphones and other mobile devices than ever before.  But does this mean that the landline has become obsolete?  Will business landlines be required in 2019?

Landline

The clear answer still remains ‘yes’ for the vast majority of businesses.  One of the core reasons for this is that we need a stable, quality connection to the internet.  This means accessing cloud-based software, making calls with VOIP systems and all those other things you do over the internet.

Just as importantly, people still see landlines as a sign of a reliable and trustworthy business with a physical location (even if that is actually your home address) and they prefer to ring landlines.  Older customers will avoid ringing mobiles for fear of a higher phone bill so offering a landline is key to securing these customers.  And for businesses looking to partner, there is still a bias towards those with that landline credential.

While smartphones are amazing, there are still limits.  There is no phone that can be used all day without needing a recharge.  Battery life remains an issue and few mobile phones have interchangeable batteries – you will still have to plug it in and wait for it to charge.

All of these factors mean that you will still likely want to have your landline in 2019 and well after that.  Mobile is key, but it isn’t all conquering just yet!
