When Should I Replace My Computer?

29 June 2017

It can a tricky question to answer but there are signs that it is time to replace your old PC with a new one…

#1 You can’t load the latest operating system

As technology has advanced, it requires more ‘latent’ memory in the PC to run the essential background activities.

Older PCs don’t have the same amount of internal memory and thus, when there are several increasingly sophisticated programs running, your PC will become slower and slower.

But eventually, the latest operating system just cannot be loaded and this is a sign it is time to upgrade.

The same goes for loading apps and games. Although programs such as Photoshop need little in the way of operating memory, for them to work as fast as you want, they need a lot more memory and space.

#2 It is slow

The speed at which your PC could or should operate is difficult to define but we think of it as this: if you make a cup of tea or coffee to return to find your PC still booting up, it is slow.

If you type a sentence but the words are several seconds behind the speed of typing, your PC is slow. And if you have more than a handful of tabs open on your internet browser and it grinds to a halt, it is slow.

The solution is to invest in new hardware.

#3 You can’t connect anything to it

There are all kinds of gadgets and gizmos you can connect to your PC including the latest in flat screen technology.

But here’s the thing, if you don’t have the right connection points or not enough or they are not the rights ones, the time has come to invest in a new PC.

#4 Your hard drive is nearly out of space

This slows your PC too but imagine the frustration of working on a document only to find that it can’t be saved to your internal hard drive. You could always invest in a USB stick (do you have a fast-enough USB port?) or an external hard drive but if your internal hard drive is slowly being crippled, unless you take action, you could be waiting days for your system to deliver what you want and need it too.

#5 It is noisy

PCs should, in the main, be relatively quiet when they operate. However, as they do grind away, they become hot and so most PC towers come equipped with internal fans to suck in air and cool the operation.

Over time, some of the fans in the older PC towers become noisy. But the good news is that the latest PC technology has taken into account overheating and as such, have no need of a fan and are silent in operation. How lovely would that be?
