As your business grows, the demand on your IT systems will also grow. In fact, within months, your current system could be creaking under the pressure and strain of what is needed from it.
But how do you know your business is in need of an IT upgrade? We highlight some of the signs…
As your business grows, the first piece of kit to feel the strain is often the servers. This means that as they try to keep up with the millions of instructions being thrown at it in a short space of space, it takes time.
If your server is struggling, then your PCs will be running slow, especially if you have complex and sophisticated pieces of software running. Frankly, if you and your team are sat staring at the screen, waiting and waiting, then it is time for the background pieces of kit to be assessed and upgraded.
Increasingly, companies and businesses are selling via online stores, websites and auction sites. This is great news for your business – customers can find you easily, buy from your securely and with confidence – but, all that web activity can mean that your IT system is beginning to come undone at the seams.
In some cases, the older versions of e-commerce packages have several steps to the buying process. As customers, we are impatient and have come to expect a quick means of online payment. If your e-commerce package is older than a few months, the likelihood is, it is too cumbersome and heavy.
Who really uses the software, the hardware, the processors and the servers? Who really sit and wait for things to load? Who get frustrated with the buffering and a task that should take minutes, takes half an hour? Who is the person or people who are frustrated when the project they have been working on disappears from their screen, never to be seen again?
The way in which management use the IT system and the way employees use the system can often be poles apart. What is not of major concern to management, may be a real issue for employees.
With this in mind, it pays for senior managers to take note of what employees are saying about the system. Is there better piece of software or hardware that will streamline process, making them cheaper and more efficient?
It could be that your employees tell you it is time for an IT system update!
No matter what line of business you are in, keeping an eye on what your main competitors are doing and not doing is key.
This doesn’t mean just looking at how their products, services or brands are developing but how they are reaching these standards. It could be that as they grow, they are also continually investing in their IT infrastructure, from bigger, faster servers, to cutting-edge software.
Don’t get left behind! Does your IT need an upgrade?
