WiFly?! Holiday season has landed

27 June 2014

The kids have finished school, your neighbours are barbequing every night, every upcoming weekend you’ve either got a hen/stag do or a wedding, your inbox is full of SALE emails…

Yes Summer is finally here, the holiday season has landed!

Chances are you’ll be lucky enough to be jetting off on holiday somewhere. Time off work gives you a chance to escape reality and responsibilities, spend time with your nearest and dearest free from the daily distractions and emails… wait don’t they have Wi-Fi on planes now?

Air travel has, for many years, been a largely phone-free zone. We've had to turn off our electronic devices, and rely instead on movies and in-flight magazines for entertainment.

Today, connectivity is much more important. Passengers don't just want to admire the view, or complain about a meal to their neighbour - they expect to be able to tweet about it, immediately, complete with pictures.

Many airlines are responding. In-flight Wi-Fi is now accessible on around many international long haul flights via companies such as Delta, Lufthansa, Emirates and Qatar Airways. Norwegian and Turkish airlines even offer the service for free, while Scandinavian airline SAS is testing it on some of its air craft now.

There are significant problems, though. Connections are often slow and unreliable. Prices can be high, and on the whole people aren’t very happy about it.

Would do think? Does in flight Wi-Fi give you 8 hours to catch up on important work whilst you’re travelling specifically for business or  do you just love connecting with friends on social media mid-flight?

Tell us about your Wi-Fi inflight business or holiday experiences, tweet @clydesolutions
